Killing Hitler. BBC2, Sunday, March 30, 8-10pm

This is a topical docu-drama about Operation Foxley, a plot for the British Special Operations Executive to kill Hitler during the 1940s, which came to light only when the papers were released by the Public Records Office in 1998. Various scenarios were discussed, but the plan failed to gain official approval, not least because of misgivings in British ruling circles about the morality of assassinating a foreign head of state, even one as unpleasant as Hitler.

Military experts analyse the scheme; Keith Allen, Kenneth Cranham and others play the drama; there is testimony from some involved. A gripping historical tale that raises questions of ethics and opens the way for hypotheses of what might have been.
