A multi-purpose arts centre focusing on education and training could be created on London’s South Bank by the millennium.

The Centre for the Performing Arts, a company headed by London Philharmonic chairman Lord Young of Graffham, wants to turn the “downstream” building of the Shell Centre into a home for arts institutions including the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, the National Film and Television School and the Centre for Young Musicians plus dance schools and even the big London orchestras. The company has bid for Pounds 90,000 National Lottery money from the Arts Council for a feasibility study.
