Next week is National Children’s Book Week, a celebration of the wealth of writing and illustration for children, with activities and events in libraries and schools around the country.

The festival will be launched on Sunday (October 8) with a family gala at the new National Literature Centre in Swansea where Children’s Book Week will run in conjunction with the UK Year of Literature and Writing.

There will be guest celebrity authors such as Francine Pascal - author of the Sweet Valley High series, which has been adapted for the BBC. Vivian French an actor, writer and storyteller will be the festival’s writerreader in residence. She will focus on children as readers, and on the authors and illustrators who create their books. Michael Rosen will host a Poetry Day on Tuesday with Gareth Owen to celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday. He will read his work and hold an open forum for children to join in and ask questions. Rosen says: “I guess books have got a struggle to survive and that all of us around literature who care about them, have a responsibility to create a buzz around reading.”

Festival Box Office: 01792 652211. For children’s book events throughout the country contact Young Book Trust information service: 0181 870 9055.
