PRIMARY trainee teachers in Wales are to miss out on the new salaries - and most secondary trainees will get paid pound;50 a week less than students in England, writes Nicolas Barnard.

The Welsh Assembly has made significant changes to the salaries and golden hellos announced by the Government.

Only trainees in shortage subjects - maths, science, technology, modern foreign languags - will receive the same deal as in England - a pound;6,000 training salary and a pound;4,000 bonus for completing their induction year and taking up a permanent job.

Other secondary trainees will get a salary of only pound;4,000, with a pound;2,000 bonus for completing induction and continuing to teach - but the assembly is considering paying that bonus only to teachers staying in Wales.
