David Newnham tries to untangle a few crossed wires
Here is an exciting new competition for the children in your life. Simply show them the following passage, then ask them to write down what they think it means.
“Qariba, a new software business within BTexact Technologies’ corporate incubator, Brightstar, has announced the appointment of John Cronin as its chief executive. The company, which was set-up in 2000, is looking to spin-out of incubation in the next six months.” Younger children might prefer to use pictures rather than words (visit your local maternity ward so they can see a real incubator), while older children might use diagrams to describe the relationship between Qariba, Brightstar and BTexact Technologies.
The prizes? Well, since the text is lifted from a BT publication, I’m sure the company could come up with something. BT is, after all, passionate about communication. Check out its Education Programme website if you don’t believe me (www.bt.com education). Where some companies might be concerned solely with nurturing brand loyalty among the next generation of customers, BT has a higher goal: “improving communication skills for all”.
Which is why you will find, in a special site called FutureTalk, a host of fun features for kids - like cartoon caption competitions (the characters just won’t listen to each other!) and cool tips such as: “Life is so much better when you’re straight with people.” And they are desperate for feedback. “Let us know what you think. Are there any new topics you wish to see on our website?” I would suggest a comprehension test, designed to help older pupils sharpen their communication skills. Something along these lines.
After studying a copy of BT Update, the colourful information leaflet that comes with every phone bill, explain: 1. The relative merits of BT Talk Together, BT Surf Together, BT Talk amp; Surf Together and BT Together (or any combination thereof). 2. The meaning of the phrase: “Clearer bills - easier ways to pay”. 3. The limitations of the statement: “It’s never been easier to manage your BT accountI” If any child answers all three adequately, set them to work finding you the right mobile phone tariff.
