What is a GNVQ?

GNVQs were introduced in 1992 as a third route to work or higher education, between academic A-levels and job-specific National Vocational Qualifications. Growing enthusiasm for BTECs and lack of response to NVQs among young people prompted ministers to back these broadly occupational, academically rigorous courses assessed by competence tests. Fifteen GNVQs at GCSE and A-level equivalent will be phased in by 1997.
