BBC Education has appointed Josh Hillman as its new head of policy. Mr Hillman, who is currently research fellow at the Institute of Public Policy Research, will take up his post in the early autumn. During his time at the IPPR he wrote “University of Industry: Creating a national learning network, ” and co-wrote “Wasted Youth: Raising Achievement and Tackling Social Exclusion, ” a book about policies for challenging disaffection and under-achievement.
The new head of Islington Green school, which failed its last inspection, is to be Marion Parsons. Ms Parsons was recruited from The Grey Coat Hospital school in Westminster and replaces Tony Garwood, who is joining Brighton and Hove authority as head of Marina High School. She will take up her new post in January. Grey Coat school was the controversial choice for her daughter by former social security secretary, Harriet Harman.
Gillian Douglas has left Bracknell and Wokingham College on being appointed vice principal of Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education. Ms Douglas who was Bracknell’s deputy principal (finance) will have responsibility for finance and corporate development. She succeeds Stan Turner who is retiring after 20 years at the college.
North Lincolnshire council’s education committee is looking for a new chair following the resignation of Rita Ellis. Ms Ellis, who has held the post since May last year will be temporarily replaced by Ian Barkley, currently vice chair. She will remain a member of the authority until next year’s elections, when she retires from local government.
The Open University, Britain’s largest university, has appointed Fraser Woodburn as Secretary. Mr Woodburn, 46, and a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, will take up his appointment in January. He is only the third secretary in the university’s 29-year history and is currently registrar and secretary at the University of Essex. He succeeds Joe Clinch, who retires at the end of the year.
Wanda Parkinson has been appointed headteacher of Barlborough Hall School, the preparatory school for Mount St Mary’s College, Sheffield, an independent Jesuit school established in 1842. Formerly head of the lower school, Ms Parkinson takes over from Adrian Taylor who is now head of Berkhamstead Collegiate Prep, Hertfordshire.
Caroline Gipps, formerly dean of research at the London University Institute of Education, has been appointed deputy pro vice chancellor of Kingston University. Professor Gipps replaces Dr Robert Godfrey who retires at the end of this year.
