EDDIE Brady (right) is the first principal of a city academy. He will take up his post at the new pound;16 million, 1,200-pupil Unity City Academy in Middlesbrough in January. It replaces Langbaurgh and Keldholme Schools. Mr Brady is head of Hermitage School in Chester-le-Street, Durham. City academies are state-funded independent schools that are built and managed by partnerships involving government and business. Amey plc is giving pound;2m in costs and in kind to the school. The Government has announced plans for 13 city academies to date.

BARBARA MacGilchrist, specialist in teacher training and school improvement, has become the new deputy director of London University’s Institute of Education. Professor MacGilchrist was dean of initial teacher education at the institute.

A former primary head, and inspector, she is a member of the national literacy and numeracy strategy group and on the board of the Teacher Training Agency.

Kent County Council has appointed Graham Badman as its next strategic director for education and libraries.

Mr Badman, currently chief education officer of Oxfordshire, was seconded last autumn to the London borough of Hackney following a highly critical inspection report.

A former director of education for Avon, he has been chairman of the Association of chief education officers and adviser to the education Select Committee of the House of Commons.

Mike Clegg is to retire as principal of Preston College at Christmas, after 14 years in the role.

Mr Clegg has overseen a substantial expansion programme and recently opened a new building for A-level students named after him. He will be succeeded by Stuart Ingleson, a former vice-principal who is returning to the college.
