William Hague has upset Conservatives in his own back-yard by claiming that North Yorkshire County Council spent pound;98,000 on unnecessary window repairs to a school which had to lay off staff through budget cuts.

Mr Hague, MP for Richmond, made the claim in the speech to right-wing think-tank Politeia, which elaunched Tory education policy. But county education chair John Dennis said he had told Mr Hague in advance that the windows were leaking, insecure and caused condensation in winter.

North Yorks Labour leader Mick Haigh said: “Mr Hague has failed to do his homework ... in his own constituency.”
