Favourite place when you have time off?

Walking across the pedestrian bridge from Eton into Windsor on a Saturday, to see the changing of the guard with my little boy, Dominic, 3. The soldiers march up to the castle, and there’s a tremendous atmosphere. Standing on the bridge, you have spectacular views.

When’s a good time to come?

The festival is a nice time. I’ll be looking at the arts and creative events (September 16-30, 01753 714 364, www.windsorfestival.com).

Daytime treats?

The Chocolate Theatre Company cafe on Windsor Bridge has fabulous homemade soups. Or we go to The Cinnamon Cafe in the renovated booking office of Windsor’s old station. It’s nice for bacon rolls and coffee on a Saturday morning. The station has an eclectic mix of shops and cafes there’s the Ha Ha bar and a tapas bar.

Evening delights?

I like to go to the theatre in Windsor about once a month it gets some of the West End shows and to the comedy club at the Arts Centre. On a Monday evening I sometimes take the French Brothers’ ferry (01753 851 900, www.boat trips.co.uk) down the river to Windsor racecourse just in time for a glass of Pimm’s and the first race.

Don’t miss

Taking a boat ride on the river. A couple of companies operate short, half hour trips and longer ones, both up and down. Or you can hire a rowing boat, or, for a longer excursion, take a boat from Kris Cruisers in Datchet (www.kriscruisers.co.uk).

If it’s your first time in Windsor, then you must take the open-top bus through Windsor and into Eton. It has a lovely feeling of being in a historic teaching town and you can take a tour of Eton College (01753 671 177, www.etoncollege.com)

I use the Royal Borough website for myself and for school research (01753 743 900, www.windsor.gov.uk).

Coming up: Barcelona, New York, Dubai and Boulogne
