For a taste of Scotland in almost any century, the newly completed website of the Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network offers more than a million records drawn from museums, galleries and historical trusts.

A curriculum navigator leads teachers from 5-14 levels in, say, environmental studies to audio, text and virtual reality records ranging from the final letter and death mask of Mary, Queen of Scots (left) to the virtual exploration of Skara Brae.

Archives have been collated from across Britain and have led to the virtual repatriation of such items as the first known Scots Gaelic manuscript from the 12th century, which is held in Cambridge University Library.

Detailed maps from epochs of every city, town and village can be accessed and, through the reproduction of the Roy Survey of 1747, more than 1,000 high definition maps (such as the one pictured above) show the geography and demography of every settlement in Scotland after the 1745 rebellion.

More than 600 paintings are featured on the website, offering enormous scope for expressive arts, and a video of comedian Billy Connelly playing the banjo on the Waverley adds a less erudite musical perspective.

All the material is copyright cleared and may be downloaded and reproduced in SCRAN licensed schools.
