Usage: “We best get back to school, Five-O will catch us.”
Sadly the days of a mesmerised Yoof having their hair ruffled and being called a “scamp” by law enforcers as they dream of one day wearing the sacred uniform are long gone. Now, the police seem to be feared or ridiculed by much of the young, and so have a roster of ever inventive nicknames to suit all occasions, from the brash (“Fedz”) to the bizarre (“Po Po”). “Five-O” is our pick, not just because it sounds cool, but because it is slightly bizarre hearing today’s hip young things referencing a TV cop show that originated in the Sixties, the term coming from Hawaii Five-O (the second bit deriving from the police unit named after the island’s status as the 50th state of the US). We like to think it was little Mark mouthing off the word while rushing back to afternoon geography that prompted CBS to bring back the show last month with a modern, CSI-esque twist.
