* More than 12 per cent of pupils are bullied at least two to three times a month. Thirty per cent of victims tell no one

* A third of all girls and a quarter of all boys are at some time afraid of going to school because of bullying

* Forty per cent of children will bully someone at some time. Boys tend to be bullied by boys, but girls are bullied by girls and boys

* In primary schools, three-quarters of bullying takes place in the playground; in secondaries it usually happens outside but can move into classrooms, corridors and toilets
