There’s no doubt about it baby, it’s cold outside.

As the nights get darker, layers get thicker, and the mission to avoid the winter-lurgy begins with gusto, Christmas can seem a long, long time away for a teacher.

Unlike everyone else, if you’re struck down with a serious case of winter blues, there’s no chance of working from home, taking a long lunch or hiding behind a computer. Instead, teachers must take a deep breath in (through the mouth if your nose is out of action) and fake it until you make it.

There are, however, some simple things you can do to to ensure you’re jingling all the way to December, says teacher Anjum Peerbacos.

Use hand sanitisers…

…and keep a stock of tissues for those students who don’t mind sneezing into their hands, sleeves, pencil cases and fellow students.

Stay hydrated

Wherever you teach, the heaters will be on. It will keep you toasty, but can lead to dehydration.

Get some sunshine

As the days become shorter, and you’re leaving and returning home in the dark, take every opportunity (yes, even playtime duty) to get outside and into the fresh air.

Drink ginger and lemon tea

This will pack a punch and bring back your zing. The spice from the ginger will held to ward off the onset of a sore throat.

Eat well

Do not skip meals. Try to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables - satsumas, clementines, blueberries and kiwis will all help to boost your immune system.

Sleep well

Always wanted an excuse to be tucked up in bed by 9pm? Now you have one.

When life gives you lemons…

... make lemon water. Whether it’s cold lemon water, hot lemon water, lemons with carbonated water, they can all help to fight infections.
