This week: Character education

If someone says...”Character education again, really?”

You say... “Yes. Like all things in education, what goes around, comes around - again and again and again. This time, it’s character education’s turn to be put back on the agenda.

If someone says...“Is Nicky Morgan back as education secretary, too?”

You say... “No, although she may be Damian Hinds’ inspiration. As we will all remember, she launched a £3.5 million Character Grant scheme in 2014, hailed as a ‘multi-million-pound push to place England as a global leader’ in teaching character.”

If someone says... “What’s Damian saying then?”

You say... “He’s said he wants five foundations for building character: sport, creativity, performing, volunteering/membership, and the world of work. Think yoga, litter-picking and hiking.

If someone says... “Like that bloody activity passport?”

You say... “Yep. Let’s just sit back and wait for this to disappear around the corner again.”
