The best institutions and individuals in further education have been recognised in the shortlist for the TES FE Awards 2017.

The prestigious awards, now in their sixth year, celebrate the dedication of leading colleges, providers, teams and individual staff to their learners.

After our judges sifted through a record number of entries - up by a third compared with last year - today, TES can reveal who has made it through to the final shortlist.

The winners in the 14 categories will be announced in a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Park Lane on 24 February. The recipient of the prestigious award for lifetime achievement will also be announced on the night. And the winners of the FE college, training provider and sixth-form college categories will vie for the flagship prize of overall FE provider of the year.

This year’s ceremony will include two new awards - professional services team of the year and assessor of the year - which were created to recognise the hard work of teams in administration and back-office roles, and the part that assessors play in the growing apprenticeship programme.

Last year, London-based training provider ELATT Connected Learning enjoyed triple success, claiming the employer engagement, training provider of the year and overall FE provider of the year awards.

Chief executive Anthony Harmer said: “As the first independent training provider to claim the flagship prize of overall provider at the TES FE Awards, we have been both thrilled and humbled by the support and recognition we’ve received.

“We were honoured to have our hard work so comprehensively recognised in the sector, and we hope we can build on this success through further collaboration with partners and industry for the benefit of both learners and employers.”

‘Joy and delight’

Stella Mbubaegbu, principal and chief executive of Highbury College in Portsmouth, spoke of her happiness at picking up the 2016 award for outstanding use of technology for improving teaching and learning. “Beyond the immediate joy and delight of being honoured by the TES FE Awards, the impact has been to inspire us to go further,” she said.

TES FE editor Stephen Exley said: “Our judges have been extremely impressed with the high quality and quantity of entries we have received this year. Congratulations to everyone on the shortlist - we look forward to seeing you on 24 February.”

Apprenticeships and skills minister Robert Halfon, who will be attending the ceremony, said: “Further education is one of the most important tools we have to give millions of people the education, skills and jobs for the future. That’s why it’s important to celebrate our FE sector, and the excellent work that is going on in colleges across England delivering quality training.

“Congratulations to everyone up for an award at the TES FE Awards 2017. You are champions of further education and play a vital role in ensuring that people of all backgrounds get on the ladder of opportunity to fulfil their potential. Thank you also to TES for making these awards such a success.”
