Shakira Martin was at Derby College in February for the launch of the government’s review of post-18 education and funding by prime minister Theresa May.
“This is something we have been saying for years that we want to see, so this is definitely a win for us,” says Martin.
“The fact that the government has announced a review shows that our voices are starting to be heard in the right places – not necessarily being listened to, but being heard.
“We are taking this as a fantastic opportunity to make sure that we encourage our students’ unions to submit to the consultation. We have completed a submission, and we are making sure we are in the right rooms and right spaces to have those conversations with those people who are part of the process.
“I think this is the time for the sector to use this opportunity to be bold in our demands and what we are asking for.”
