MAT Tracker: mapping the country’s multi-academy trusts

https://www.tes.com/magazine/leadership/data/mat-tracker-map-of-multi-academy-trusts

There are more than 1,300 multi-academy trusts in England, running nearly 11,000 academies.

But MATs are not evenly spread across the country.

While bigger trusts often operate across several regions, many others focus on particular localities.

Our interactive map shows where each MAT is headquartered, along with the number of schools that it runs:

We are updating the map regularly as part of our MAT Tracker tool (please send any feedback to the Tes news team).

Tes’ MAT Tracker is also analysing decisions made by the Department for Education’s regional advisory boards, and condensing the essential information from board meetings for readers.

Regional differences

London is home to the largest number of MATs, with 220 trusts headquartered in the capital. The South East is the region with the second biggest number, with 193, while the North East has the fewest, with 81.

As can be seen in the map, the size of MATs varies significantly, with trusts running between one and 92 schools.

Analysis of official data also shows that the average MAT oversees eight schools, and academies in the South West tend to belong to the biggest MATs, with 13.4 schools per trust on average.

MATs in the North East, meanwhile, are most likely to operate within regional boundaries - nearly four out of five only run schools in the region (79 per cent). This compares with just 9 per cent of trusts in Yorkshire and the Humber only operating in the region.

The average MAT headquartered in the South West has 11 schools. This region is followed by Yorkshire and the Humber and the East Midlands, where trusts run 10 each on average.

The smallest MATs are those based in the North West, which run just under six schools on average. However, there will be plenty of academies in the region that are run by bigger MATs headquartered elsewhere.

The majority of MATs are relatively small, with 691 trusts (50.3 per cent) running between one and five schools. A further 350 trusts oversee six to 10 schools, and around 240 MATs operate between 11 and 20 schools.

A small number of trusts (42) manage between 31 and 50 schools each. There are six very large MATs that operate more than 50 schools each.

The biggest trust, United Learning, grew even bigger this year, taking its total to 92 schools - up from 89. Headquartered in Peterborough and incorporated in 2022, United Learning runs schools across the country.

The second biggest MAT is Delta Academies Trust, with 63 schools, and in third is REAch2 Academy Trust, with 62 primary schools.
