Podcast: Adapting to a rapid influx of EAL students

In this episode of the Tes International podcast, we chat with Chris Woodhams, assistant principal (academic) at St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia, about how the school revamped its focus on pupils with English as an additional language (EAL).

He explains how it involved bringing in outside consultants to help identify areas of strength and improvement, doubling staff in its EAL department and embedding a whole school approach to EAL, including boosting CPD.

Woodhams also expands on why all of this requires trial and error - and the time for staff to develop these skills.

As more EAL pupils enter international schools, this is becoming a major area of focus for schools across the world, similar to settings in the UK where EAL is also a major priority.
