Staff in a significant number of schools have not been made aware of the dangers of asbestos, don’t know where it is and are not involved in its management, a survey has found. Research by the teaching union Voice found that 52 per cent of school and nursery staff had not received training in dealing with the presence of asbestos in their buildings. The survey of 790 staff was carried out to support the union’s call for an audit of asbestos in educational institutions, followed by an action plan to provide training and guidance on the potentially lethal substance.
