When teachers get their heads kicked in by violent pupils, what do you give them? Lessons in Kung Fu? A beefy security guard? Er no - you hand out a nice badge.

A National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers’ initiative which sent out 5,000 badges with the slogan “Zero Tolerance: No to Assaults, Yes to Respect” to teachers in eastern England has met with a less than ecstatic response on The TES website’s staffroom forum.

“You might just as well have a notice pinned to your back saying ‘Kick me!’,” said one teacher, “What we need is the type of follow-up to abuse that other “services” get: security comes and physically removes offenders and the police are contacted. What do we get? A badge.”
