Chicago big on small school development

Your article about school building in Chicago (“Chicago’s big chance”, Friday, March 16) was a one-sided account.

The US has a growing small school movement, based in Chicago, which has gathered momentum in the wake of the killings at Columbine. Since 1990, 150 small high schools have sprung up in Chicago and 24 new small chools will open there in the next decade. Many US politicians are realising that what children need most of all is a safe and supportive environment in which to learn - and that this cannot be provided in large schools. Chicago is leading the way in showing the alternatives.
