The 18-year-old from Cardiff got a fistful of GCSEs and studied for A-levels at the city's Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. He's just started a national diploma in marine engineering at Pembroke college, and wants to continue his studies at university with the aim of getting a job in the marine industry.
He and his younger brother were fostered by their grandmother, Kath Bell, which gave them a stable home environment.
Grant says: "It's important to have a stable place to go back to after school, to have someone to go to. You need to feel loved by the person you are staying with, to help you stay in school.
"All my really close friends knew I was in care and it didn't seem to bother them. I was OK in school, I knuckled down and did my work."
He says his teachers found out what courses he needed to study to get into marine engineering. But the family had problems getting the right information about what grants he could claim to help him get to college and university.
