A company aiming to make inroads into the British private school sector has appointed a new principal for one of its schools. Julian Whitely, headteacher of Taunton school in Somerset and an independent schools inspector, will join Sherfield school, near Southampton, with fees of pound;9,829 a year, as its principal in January 2005. Dubai-based Global Education Management Systems (GEMS) has bought Sherfield and two other schools in England since September 2003.
