Two Scots are among a group of 22 UK teachers who have been selected to take part in an intensive 10-day Holocaust study trip in Israel.

Anthea Hunter, principal teacher of social subjects at Lochgilphead High and Edward Sutherland, principal teacher of religious, moral and philosophical studies and citizenship at Belmont Academy in Ayr, are at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem. They were chosen after submitting applications that reflected the importance they attributed to Holocaust education and its impact on their students.

The course includes lectures and workshops led by leading Holocaust academics; eyewitness accounts; and guidance on how to teach the topic in the UK, delivered by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Ms Hunter visited Auschwitz last year with two senior pupils as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project. “Going to Auschwitz affected me very deeply. When I returned, I wanted to explore the whole subject in more depth so as to bring it into my teaching in the best, most informed way possible,” she said.
