A Leicestershire science teacher has received a new award from the Royal Society, recognising the unsung heroes of science laboratories and schools.

Judith Green, who teaches at the Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough, but is also lead educator at the National Space Centre’s Space Academy, received the Haucksbee Award at a special reception in London recently. She received a Royal Society bronze medal, a scroll and #163;500.

Ms Green, an advanced skills teacher who gave up a career in industry to go into education, said: “It’s a move I’ve never regretted - I love science and I have a real passion for teaching. It’s wonderful to be able to pass on my enthusiasm for the subject to others.”

She won the award for her work across Leicestershire, engaging children in science, and physics in particular.

Anu Ojha, director of education and space communications at the National Space Centre, said: “Judith’s winning of this prestigious award is richly deserved.” IB.
