TEACHERS in church schools this week raised moral objections to using cash from gambling to fund computer training, writes Clare Dean.
Ministers came under fire for raiding the National Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund to pay for the pound;230 million training scheme. Teachers have to register for the courses to qualify for up to pound;500 towards a new laptop.
Richard Wilkins, general secretary of the Association of Christian Techers, said: “Education is a good thing and should be funded as such, not as a rather large by-product of a gamble.”
Adrian Joice, from Newland St John’s CE primary in Hull, added: “Such gambling often appeals to those who can least afford to waste money on false hopes.”
But while teachers may not like it, governors are more at ease. Not one complained to the National Governors Council about lottery funding.
