A school organic food project is boosting pupils’ healthy eating in Angus and swelling the parent councils’ coffers. Parents and teachers at Southmuir Primary and Webster’s High in Kirriemuir piloted the project by Bee-Organic, which delivers fruit and vegetable boxes direct to the gates when the parents are collecting their children. The initiative saves time and petrol by making a one-stop delivery, and the company injects 10 per cent of each parent’s spend back into parent council funds. These are then used for playground equipment, school trips and the pupils’ poly-tunnel in which they grow their own vegetables. Southmuir Nursery pupils use the produce as part of their daily menu, and discuss with teachers what they would like to order online. The company now hopes to extend the school scheme to Dundee.
