June Fisher, a former National Union of Teachers president and head of Catford Girls School, Lewisham, London, for more than 20 years, has died of cancer, aged 66.

Mrs Fisher’s career began at Peckham School in 1952, where she became head of history. She spent three years as deputy head of Acland Burghley School in Camden before taking on the headship at Catford County School in 1971.

Her political beliefs shifted from right (she was chair of the Young Conservatives at Bristol University) to left. As a Labour-supporting moderate she fought to regain control of the NUT from more militant elements in the 1980s. She joined the union’s executive in 1984 and became president in 1989 and retired from teaching in 1994.
