News that the hip-hop mogul was to found the school, called Capital Prep Harlem, broke last week, with Mr Combs, who goes by the stage name “Puff Daddy”, describing it as a “dream come true”.

And according to the charter’s designated principal Danita Jones, the school will eschew the usual job title “teacher”, choosing instead to go with the term “illuminator” due to the fact they are more than mere instructors.

“What I did as a teacher was not what illuminators do,” Jones said, according to the LA Times. “Illuminators literally ... coparent.”

The illuminators will have to call parents every two weeks, while they will also be asked to set aside time each day to look at their students’ social-emotional needs.

The school will open in September initially with 160 students in grades 6 and 7, before eventually expanding to 700 children in grades 6 through 12.

In a statement about the new school, Mr Combs said: “I want to impact the lives of young people in my community, and build future leaders. The first step is offering access to a quality education. All our children should be able to pursue their dreams.”

The overarching theme of the school will be “social justice”, with students expected to work on “social justice projects” during their school career.
