Schools are being encouraged to set up a national network of cooking clubs aimed at increasing healthy eating among children.

Let’s Get Cooking, an initiative being developed by the School Food Trust, hopes to have the first clubs running by the spring, and to have 4,000 clubs operating by the end of next year.

Pupils will take the lead in establishing and running the clubs, with teachers playing a support role. The pupils will be able to take part in national and local activites and share ideas with others on a website.

Funding will be provided for equipment, materials and activities for three years. Clubs will attend planning days to help them set up and then receive support from termly packs and newsletters.

Pupils will also be encouraged to establish schemes with their local communities and businesses to help ensure the clubs continue when the funding runs out.
