Instruments of torture and punishment from the Tower of London will be on display at the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, in “Prisoners in the Tower: Treason, Torture and Execution”, until January 4. The exhibition focuses on the period when the Tower was used as a state prison from Henry VIII’s reign to the Gunpowder Plot, and again in the 20th century when Rudolf Hess among others was incarcerated there.
Exhibits include the block used at the last public beheading in 1747, an executioner’s axe, manacles, thumbscrews, plaster cast reproductions of “graffiti” and the stories of those who left them such as Lady Jane Grey and the gunpowder plotters. Details: 0113 220 1999.
