Scottish funding Council officials have agreed to meet representatives from Unison over the union’s fears for the future of Stow College in Glasgow.

Unison, which lobbied the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday for the start of a “Save Stow” campaign, is concerned that Stow will lose some of its funding if a large number of its courses are transferred to the new pound;300 million City of Glasgow College.

Stow has refused to join Glasgow Metropolitan College, Central College and the College of Nautical Studies in the merged institution.

Jim Snell, of Unison’s Glasgow branch, says that if Stow courses and students are absorbed by the merged college, “it will no longer be a viable college, so in essence it is being forced to the merger table or to huge uncertainty”.

In a statement to The TESS, the funding council agreed to a meeting with Unison and pledged full consultation.

It added: “We will be able to reassure them that any changes will be introduced over time and that the stability of college provision in the city will be safeguarded throughout the development of the project.”
