The Citizenship Foundation has put free teaching materials online to tie in with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain.

“Ending Slavery: An unfinished business” includes lesson plans, worksheets and teaching ideas aimed at Years 9 and 10.

The materials have been designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of the trade and the campaign to bring it to an end during the 18th and 19th centuries. It also explores modern-day slavery and the influence pressure groups can have on Parliament and decision-makers.

Don Rowe, the foundation’s director of curriculum resources, said: “The materials have a strong citizenship orientation and focus on the way individuals, small and large groups can take action to bring about change.”

The lesson materials can be downloaded at www.citizenshipfoundation.org.ukmainresource.php?s324
