(Photograph) - Francesca Massey has become the first woman in the 653-year history of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to be awarded an organ scholarship. The 17-year-old, who started learning the organ six years ago, will take up her place to read music in October 2002, after taking her A-levels, and after completing a year’s scolarship at St George’s chapel, Windsor. Francesca, a student at Edgbaston high school, Birmingham, said: “I think the organ has traditionally been associated with men because they have historically dominated cathedral music. But it is a wonderful instrument and there is no reason why girls can’t play just as well as boys.”
