Tony Leach, head of Thomas Mills High School, Framlingham, Suffolk, will become principal of Hamilton College in Lanarkshire, an independent Christian school, on April 24. Meanwhile, John Gamble, assistant principal, continues as acting principal.

Anne Coutts, head of Eothen School, Caterham, Surrey, will become head of Sutton High School in September upon the retirement of Alison Cavendish.

Stephen Meek, a housemaster at Sherborne School, Dorset, has been appointed head of Hurstpierpoint College, West Sussex, from September. He will replace Simon Watson, who is resuming his earlier career as a children’s books author.

David Hempsall, head of Scarborough College, North Yorkshire, will become head of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, from September 1. He succeeds Philip Johnston, who became principal of St Christopher’s School, Bahrain, last September after 17 years as head. Meanwhile, Eric Whittle, vice-master of QEGS, is acting head.

Sylvia Smith, office administrator for Age Concern in Beverley, Humberside, and a mature student at Beverley College, is one of only two people in the world to receive a coveted award from the Royal Society of Arts. She won a bronze medal for the high quality of her work and portfolio of evidence produced as part of the Accreditation of Prior Learning process.
