Football was also on the agenda at the Association for College Management’s annual conference last week. Guest Mike Riley, the football referee, revealed a useful trick of the trade that might come in handy for some of my FE chums.

Mr Riley, a finance director of Nelson and Colne college when he achieved his dream of refereeing an FA cup final two years ago, has since left the impoverished sector.

If you’re in any doubt about which team is entitled to a throw-in, he says, the best thing to do is stand there and do nothing.

“One player will go and get the ball and throw it in, and the other will let him,” he said. “So they have made your decision for you.”

Now that’s delegation.
