SINGAPORE

Schools and colleges have been given a key role in plans to make Singapore Asia’s leading user of information technology. Under the recently-launched “One” programme, every pupil will be given access to the new national multi-media network.

The network enables pupils to download educational television and video programmes as well as to gain quick access to the Internet and a wide range of libraries and other information sources.

The multi-billion pound project is regarded as crucial in preparing young Singaporeans for the high-tech business culture of the new millennium.

The government hopes the investment will ensure Singapore’s future as one of the world’s leading centres for Internet commerce and trade.

Courses are being introduced to show pupils how to make full use of the new multimedia services and to help them understand and appreciate the potential of the Internet.

Singaporean pupils are already the world’s leading achievers in maths and science; the initiatives are aimed at attaining a similar status for the country in information technology.
