Institute of Race Relations
www.homebeats.co.uk

Following the success of its award-winning educational CD-Rom, HomeBeats, the Institute of Race Relations has applied some of the same techniques to its web site, turning it into an attractive and efficient source of information on race relations in Britain and Europe.

The redesign includes a new resources area, which begins with a simple online quiz - “So you think you know about racism and black British history?” - aimed at GCSEGNVQ students. Then there’s a series of factsheets on racism in different areas of British society today, designed to fill in some of the gaps.

Another section is devoted to the Stephen Lawrence inquiry, setting the context and including the IRR’s own submissions to the inquiry. A table summarising the IRR’s research into racially-motivated murders in Britain since 1991 is necessarily shocking,

An elegant interactive map provides instant access to the essential findings of a long-term research project into racism and fascism across Europe. Click on a country - even a supposedly enlightened one, such as Denmark - and up come the grim figures, the disturbing election results, the “fortress Europe” attitudes.

Depressing, and chilling, much of it is. More to the point, it attacks ignorance. Judging by some of the comments on the feedback page from pupils and students, the site is hitting all the right notes. https:www.tes.co.uk.
