The TES’s international editor Brendan O’Malley was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize, which rewards “outstanding contribution to the art of political writing”. The nomination was for his ground-breaking book on the 1974 invasion of Cyprus, The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, espionage and the Turkish invasion, co-authored with Ian Craig. It charted the United tates’ involvement with events in 1974 and revealed that Washington had planned to allow the Turks to invade northern Cyprus a decade earlier. The Orwell Prize in the books category went to Brian Cathcart for The Case of Stephen Lawrence (Viking); David McKittrick of The Independent won the journalism prize for his reports from Northern Ireland.
