What started out as a shed for injured hedgehogs 14 years ago has now become one of the most advanced wildlife hospitals in Britain. St Tiggywinkles, founded by Les Stoker and family, is now a haven for about 4,000 injured and orphaned animals a year, including rabbits, foxes, badgers and birdlife.
Tales from St Tiggywinkles, narrated by Tiggy the (glove puppet) hedgehog gives well-informed facts and information about the rescued animals and their habitats.
Every care is taken to ensure the “patients” are treated until well enough to be released back into the wild. And Les Stoker emphasises that because they are wild, they are not treated as pets, so human contact is kept to a minimum. With this in mind surrogate parents are provided for the orphans. We are shown two baby rabbits snuggling up to a pile of assorted teddybears and the ducklings being comforted by a feather duster.
All the cases have happy endings, showing how the animals came to be at the hospital, their treatment, and their releases back to their natural homes.
This is a captivating video for children of all ages and would be a good starting point for a discussion about wildlife and the environment.
