Which SQA courses are most likely to result in A grades?

The annual Scottish Qualifications Authority results day publications have released a staggering amount of data that teachers and school leaders can pore over.

Much of it we have already highlighted yesterday, but today we look at the likelihood of achieving an A grade at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.

We compared all subjects with 1,000 or more entries in 2025 SQA National 5 and Higher courses, and all subjects with 500 or more entries in Advanced Higher courses.

The data reveals big disparities. For example, at Higher there are only two subjects in which more than half of entries result in an A: Spanish (51.8 per cent) and French (51.4 per cent).

In contrast, only 10.9 per cent of health and food technology entries at Higher result in an A grade - meaning that the likelihood of an A among the French and Spanish cohorts is almost five times higher.

More on SQA results and data 2025:

There are similarly wide gaps at N5 and Advanced Higher.

At National 5, 58.1 per cent of German entries resulted in an A grade in 2025, whereas only 20.3 per cent of practical cake craft entries led to an A.

At Advanced Higher, 47.1 per cent of music entries resulted in an A grade, but only 14.8 per cent of PE entries achieved the same.

These graphs show the full list of high-uptake subjects and the proportion of entries that got an A grade at N5, Higher and Advanced Higher:
