Environmental campaigner Bill Lucas is to become the Campaign for Learning’s first chief executive from November 3. The campaign was set up by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce to motivate more individuals to take responsibility for their own lifelong learning.

The Campaign for Learning has become a powerful pressure group, gaining the support of public and private industry. Mr Lucas has a track record for promoting educational charities, having set up Learning through Landscapes in 1994 to promote a better environment for children at school, for which he received a Guardian Jerwood Award for individual excellence.
