The proportion of GCSE grades that were changed after challenges were upheld has increased by a fifth in the space of a year, new Ofqual data reveals.

The figures for the November series of English language and maths exams also reveal a 15 per cent rise in the number of challenges to GCSE grades.

In November last year, 113,610 grades were awarded, of which 0.76 per cent, or 860, were changed following challenges.

That compares with November 2018 when there were 108,080 grades awarded, of which 0.63 per cent, or 680, were changed after a challenge.

The number of challenges rose from 4,255 for the November 2018 grades to 4,885 last year.

Challenges to English grades outnumbered maths challenges by more than two to one. The most commonly challenged GCSE grade was grade 3, which accounted for 91.4 per cent of challenges.
