Gavin Williamson Has Said It Was Not A Mistake For Ofsted's Budgets To Be Cut In The Past.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson has told heads that widespread school closures would have a negative impact on the NHS because its staff would have to take time off to look after their children.

He will tell the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) conference today that the government was being guided by expert advice as it responds to the coronavirus outbreak.

He is expected to say: “The chief medical officer has said the impact of closing schools on children’s education will be substantial, but the benefit to public health would not be.

“The government is particularly mindful of the strain on public services like the NHS that would be caused by key workers having to stay home to look after their children as a result of school closures.”

He has also sought to reassure heads that the department was planning for the impact of the outbreak.

Mr Williamson will say: “I also want to take this opportunity to reassure you that my department is working flat out with Public Health England to share the latest scientific and medical information and advice with you as and when we get it, so that as soon as we know, you know.

“Ever since Covid-19 started causing concerns in January, my department has been issuing regular guidance and updates on how you should respond to keep your schools functioning and everyone in them fit and well.

Geoff Barton, the ASCL general secretary, has revealed that school leadership organisations are due to meet with Mr Williamson next week to discuss the implications of school closures as a result of the virus outbreak.

Mr Barton has also called for Sats and league tables to be cancelled this year if schools are forced to closed as a result of the outbreak.

More to follow.
