Kent and Medway Training

Kent and Medway Training are an established, large and successful School Centred Initial Teaching Training (SCITT) provider in the UK. For the past five years, Tes Institute has been delivering Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) to their trainee teachers before they start initial teacher training. Stuart Russell from Kent and Medway Training shares his experience working with us and how the partnership has helped with their recruitment.

“The past few years have led to us achieving our highest ever levels of employment and trainee teacher outcomes at the end of the training period. We feel that one of the key contributors to this has been our developing partnership with SKE and Tes Institute.”

What do you think of the courses and has the content been an effective pre-initial teacher training solution?

Outstanding teachers have to have excellent subject knowledge for teaching, so enabling trainees to have access to the SKE courses at an early stage provides them with a really strong foundation to build on.

While the courses are subject specific, they're always clearly linked to pedagogy and the trainees are constantly able to link theory with practice.

How have you found our SKE process?

The communication and prompt responses that we receive enable our trainees to register and get going really quickly once they've accepted our conditional offer. The fact that the SKE courses have a fortnightly start date works very nicely alongside our on-going recruitment procedures.

How useful are the check-in reports for keeping track of trainees' progress?

They're great, very useful, we share those reports with the learner’s school and when trainees aren’t keeping up, these checks allow us to intervene quickly. They give us an early insight into the trainee and how proactive that person is before they start their initial teacher training (ITT).
