This year, the Eden Project is bringing The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out together on 5-8 June for one big do – a weekend of friendship, food, fun and action. This programme has been designed to guide your school to take part in the Big Help Out. The programme will introduce children to the Sustainable Development Goals, showing them how local issues fit into the global context and guide them to choose a cause to take action for Inspire them with the examples of amazing young change-makers Demonstrate some different types of social action that are appropriate responses to their chosen cause Help them plan, execute and then reflect and celebrate on their action The programme takes place over roughly four sessions of circa 45 minutes in length.

This year, the Eden Project is bringing The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out together on 5-8 June for one big do – a weekend of friendship, food, fun and action. Whether it’s raising awareness, supporting a local cause or bringing people together, this programme provides a simple way to turn good intentions into meaningful action – helping your students see that they can be part of positive change in their community. Taking part will help build confidence, encourage teamwork and give a sense of purpose. These lesson plans are designed to take up approximately 20 minutes each (sessions 1 – 3) and then 40 minutes (sessions 4 & 5 combined). Pupils receive a challenge to participate in a community gathering. In preparation, pupils work in groups to identify the special features of community gatherings across the UK. The class draws on their learning to design a new community celebration based around a famous person, special place or annual event. They devise additional features to enhance a community event, such as special costumes, food or music and dance. These activities and resources have been devised to promote an inclusive and multi-cultural approach to learning across the curriculum and can be easily adapted.

In this set of lesson plans, pupils receive an invitation to a teddy bears’ picnic. The invitation stimulates a number of creative and cross-curricular learning activities including games, role-play and story. Colourful resources of ‘bears on location’ help pupils to consider all aspects of picnic protocol, including what not to wear, how to find the perfect picnic spot, choosing what to eat and practising picnic manners. These activities and resources offer a play-based approach to teaching and provide opportunities to link classroom learning with learning outside. The lesson is part of three in the set ‘The Big Lunch: Teddy Bear’s Picnic’, ‘The Big Lunch: Picnic Plate’ and ‘The Big Lunch Picnic Planning’. These lessons also link in with ‘The Greenest Big Lunch Challenge’ lesson plan.

Pupils are taught The Big Lunch Street Party song in preparation for their community event. To introduce the topic, they are invited to explore their school site and makes notes around the five senses and the different things they can see, hear, taste, small and touch. Pupils are asked what different sounds they heard, so as to hone in on their auditory sense. They can also be shown examples of concerts at the Eden Project. Likes and dislikes are discussed, before the class sings the Street Party song and taps along to the beat. Pupils are invited to make up their own verses and perform to the rest of the class. They then discuss music’s role in community events, how it can bring people together and what is needed for successful performance. These activities and resources offer a challenge-based approach to learning about music and performance or as part of a cross-curricular extension/enrichment programme.

Pupils are asked to plan a Big Lunch for a community group. In preparation they research different food festivals and traditions around the world and look at pictures of previous Big Lunch events. Pupils work in groups to practice planning meals for different gatherings. They draw on this learning to plan, prepare and hold a Big Lunch for their community group and evaluate all aspects of the event including the menu design, food quality, venue layout, entertainment and budget. These activities and resources offer a challenge-based approach to learning about food or as part of a cross-curricular extension/enrichment programme.

The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project that aims to inspire millions of people across the UK to strengthen their social connections and do something positive for their community and for the planet. As an environmental charity, the Eden Project wants to help participants make their Big Lunch as planet friendly as possible. With that in mind, this complete KS2 lesson aims to help schools, teachers and their pupils consider what ‘greener’ might look like. What swaps can be made to make Big Lunch food planet-friendly? How can food waste be minimised? The plan is designed to be accessible and geared towards discussing and highlighting changes that can be made or actions which can be taken rather than being an in-depth dive into the topic of sustainable food systems. It taps into WWF’s Livewell diet as a simple way of framing the actions we can take. The children are invited to design their own Big Lunch menu based on the conversations they have had and finally, justify their choices. Complete with a Rainforest Big Lunch story for carpet time, this lesson covers several areas of the KS2 Citizenship curriculum.
