KS3 Resistant Materials Booklet

(9)
I wanted to make my KS3 booklets more interactive, exiting and visually appealing to learners of all abilities. I used angry birds as a theme as I found that my learners responded well to this type of visual stimuli. The project I am doing with them is a simple balancing toy to develop their basic metal work skills. I also wanted to emphasise the national curriculum requirements in a simple way. At the start of the project learners are given the opportunity to discuss and develop an understanding of the curriculum logo's (thinking, communication, etc) and how they relate to their work. I have added the document in both PDF and Microsoft publisher format. All fonts such as 'angry birds' are available from dafont.com .

Bottle Opener Project KS4

I created this project in order for my Year 10 learners to develop an understanding of metal skills in line with the WJEC specification. Learners are given a brief to manufacture a bottle opener from mild steel blank. All learners make their bottle opener from the same working drawing however they have an opportunity to design the handle and engrave using the laser cutter. I have included the working drawing and the work booklet I use with them through this project learners are given the opportunity to cut, shape, drill and heat treat metal. They also develop an understanding of accuracy and tolerances. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Specification Starter task

I was recently observed and needed a quick and effective starter task to engage my learners. The topic was 'Writing a specification' as we were making mobile phone holders I decided to create a group work task where learners had to discuss and decide what the designer was thinking when he/she designed products. Each group had a different Phone holder to look at and then had to discuss their findings on the whiteboard. I found this was highly effective in getting learners to understand the purpose of a design specification.

Practical Progress Diary

(4)
I found that learners at KS4 were reluctant to take charge of their own learning and that they lacked sense of direction when it came to practical activities. In order to encourage independence and a sense of responsibility in their work I give learners a diary which they have to log progress at the end of every lesson and highlight where they need to go next. I have tried this at both Year 10 and year 11 (CAT) and it seems to be having a positive effect on the pace of lessons and the progress made within them.
