These sensory stories are created for students who benefit from a sensory and hands on approach for learning.
Each story introduces simple 2D and 3D shapes through a multi-sensory, highly engaging approach. Each part of the story focuses on a different shape and is paired with sensory experiences such as touch, movement, sound or simple actions to help students explore and recognise the shapes in a meaningful way.
The aim of the stories are to support early mathematical awareness, attention and engagement. The predictable structure, repetition and sensory elements help make the learning accessible and enjoyable for learners with complex needs.
This resource was originally created for a KS4 SEND ASDAN group where students were encouraged to write about themselves and share their interests, strengths and personal goals as part of an autobiography.
It also works perfectly as an “All About Me” activity for school settings. The resource is designed to be accessible for learners of all ages and abilities, with clear structure and symbol support to aid communication and understanding.
A great way to support self-expression, communication, and getting to know students at the start of term or within a personalised learning programme.
Used for an ASD class, to look at rocks and soil.
Pupils explored rocks and soil in class afterwards. Pupils felt textures, shapes and sizes of different rocks, and comparing them. Additionally, pupils explored soils found in different areas (garden, plants, playground etc), mixing them with water.
Used for a sensory class, where all materials were made available to pupils. Pupils explored the materials, and said whether they could see through or not with various levels of support.
Created a sensory story for the Good Samaritan, for a sensory class.
Linked in with PSHE and RE, used for talking about helping our friends.
Visual worksheet to sort characteristics of good and bad friends.
PowerPoint created for a sensory class. Linked in with French, going to Paris on the aeroplane and then a tour around Paris, using sensory elements for each monument.
Also a matching activity, where pupils find monument on map and match to picture.
Used for a DT sensory class, we explored different types of sports clothing and non-sports clothing. Pupils then matched sports clothing symbol to symbol on models, then dressed their own models and then sorted sports clothing from other clothing.
