The Characteristics of Effective Learning are a key element of the EYFS. I wrote this story to introduce the different characteristics to the children in my nursery and reception class. The story introduces Hedgehog, who loves to play and explore. Fox who is an active learner and never gives up. Then Owl who is a critical thinker. This story is supported by using the WHSmiths Bramblewood Toys but you can buy hedgehogs, fox and owl puppets / toys online for a good price. The Animals of Wisdom Woods A simple display to use to encourage your EYFS children to discuss 'how' they learn. The characters are bought from the Bramblewood selection in WHSmiths but a hedgehog, fox and owl can be bought at a reasonable price online. I used this display in my nursery and reception class. the children were encouraged to place their photo under which animal they thought they had been like in child initiated time. I was graded as Outstanding in my last Ofsted inspection.

This is a pack suitable for children in Nursery and beginning Reception. National Handwriting Day is January 23rd 2018. The consists of: - 4 simple tasks encouraging mark making. You can laminate these task cards or as I do display them in plastic stands in the activity areas. - 1 individual challenge sheet - the child colours the smiley face in once they've completed each activity. I used this pack as a Parent Workshop. The parents would visit the 4 Mark Making Stations and also be given a little talk about early writing.

A simple song to use daily after child initiated time. you could display this on your IWB as you sing. The song encourages the children to talk about 'how' they learnt and which characteristics they displayed. You could use the soft toys in the middle of the circle and children collect the animal they were like un their learning i.e. didn't give up like Fox etc. Look at the rest of my Wisdom Woods resources!
